Nearly 22,000 young people across Scotland - from
Orkney to the Borders - have participated in our education projects
over the past 11 years.
Our Theatre Education programme initiate successfully toured secondary
schools and youth groups around Scotland in autumn 2001 and 2002.
initiate is an interactive education programme for young women.
Based around a specially-commissioned play by Scotland’s leading
young female playwright – Isabel Wright – the programme
is a dynamic combination of live performance, creative participation,
debate, role-play and group work.
initiate premiered in 2001 in conjunction with its sister
production by the same author - the highly acclaimed rites-of-passage
play Blooded - which boilerhouse
toured to various Scottish venues in Oct-Nov 2001.
initiate supplies an environment
for active learning and actively encourages and motivates young women
to participate in the dramatic action. In a direct and accessible manner,
it addresses themes of crucial relevance to young women today, including:
-
Self esteem
-
Peer pressure
-
Their bodies and body image
-
Their place in society
-
The choices available to them
-
The way that womens roles have changed in recent times
Both tours of initiate were extremely successful,
receiving positive feedback from the young female participants, and
teachers and youth workers alike.
"...A thoroughly enjoyable session, in turns
stimulating, entertaining and thought provoking. Above all, the pupils
were made to challenge not only the way they see others, but also made
aware of how others view them. Perhaps most importantly, how they see
themselves...
Harry Lennon, Teacher
St John's RC High School
